Many of you will already know that the EBU has been proposing certain changes in their arrangements for membership. At a recent Council meeting they got the go-ahead to progress these ideas for implementation in 2010. Assuming that our club will retain its affiliation to the EBU, there will be some changes to membership arrangements and possibly table money. It is too early for the current Committee to quantify precise details but I do not envisage any very significant changes in members' annual expenditure for playing at the Club. More details can be found on the EBU website, and will also be published in the upcoming issues of Club Focus and English Bridge. John Marshall (24/06/08)

The Master points award mid-Feb to 1 May has now been registered. There is a list on the club notice board (left hand side). There are three categories: (a ) automatically registered with the EBU (b) printed certificates where requested for some non-EBU members (c) unregistered points where players are not recognised as EBU members. You can check the award on the EBU website by going to the Master Points page and entering your EBU number. (Any problems speak to Trevor.) Note there are a few competitions e.g. Sim pairs that award paper certificates that need to be sent to the EBU with a paper claim form. There is a considerable number of certificates to be claimed in the yellow box usually left on the information area at the club. (Ask the director if you can't see it.) (02/06/08)
Duplicated duplicate! A new form of duplicate was played on Wednesday 21 May. After play had finished it emerged that the hands were exactly the same as those played the previous Wednesday. It looks as though the hands had been properly duplimated, but using the wrong file. One pair had had a long inquest on a missed slam the previous week and could not believe their luck when they got a second chance - slam made! (27/05/08)

On the first weekend of April the Club enjoyed another of its annual trips away. The break was organised with his usual efficiency by Eric Smith and for the second year running, by popular request, we returned to the Whitehouse hotel at Worcester. Fifty two players, together with a few non-playing partners, attended the occasion. The accommodation, food and facilities proved highly satisfactory and a pleasant social occasion was enjoyed by all. The weather was cold but fair and many members took advantage of the various attractions the city has to offer. The bridge was played in a most friendly, but competitive, spirit and Eric employed a system that ensured that many of the players received prizes. Hearty thanks on behalf of the Committee and members are once again due to Eric, who hopefully may be persuaded to do do the same thing again next year. John Marshall.

As many members will know, the Club held its AGM on Wednesday 12th March. A brief report on the outcome will appear on this website shortly. Meanwhile I feel that I have to express some disappointment. The Committee arranged this year's meeting for a Wednesday in order that those members who choose, or are perhaps only able, to come on that day of the week would have an opportunity to take a full part in the running of the Club. Bearing in mind that there are usually some 20 tables on a Wednesday and that several 'Tuesday' and 'Thursday' players could be expected to attend the actual turnout was comparatively low. As we now have over 200 members this was disappointing, and I would hope that we could expect to see an improved figure in future years. John Marshall, Chairman

Visitors from Aix-en-Province. Bath bridge players are playing host in June 2008 to a group of players from our twin town of Aix-en-Provence. This is returning the hospitality shown by that town and its bridge players to a group of Bath Bridge Club members last June. The visit is scheduled to be from Tuesday 24 until Saturday 28 June next year. We are hoping that at least some of the visitors can be accommodated with local bridge players. If you feel that you might be able to help please let me know. Further details of the visit and the likely duties of potential hosts can be obtained from me, Andrew Clarke or Marion Cowley. With the technical problems hopefully behind us, attention is now focused on avoiding errors. Members are urged to read the attachment (27/07/07)
Regular use of Bridgemate resumes as of Tuesday 24th July.
